4 AREAS OF FOCUS
Creating Breastfeeding-Friendly Environments for Healthier Families
Breastfeeding offers many benefits for both mom and baby. Infants who receive breast milk have a lower risk of developing asthma, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), type 1 diabetes, and ear infections. Breastfeeding also reduces a mother’s risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Breast milk changes as a baby gets older to meet their needs. Additionally, a mother’s milk passes her antibodies to the baby, helping to build a strong immune system.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, with continued breastfeeding for two years or longer, as mutually desired. However, most mothers stop breastfeeding sooner than they planned, and Alabama has some of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the nation. Mothers need support from their families, communities, and early childhood education (ECE) programs to be more likely to reach their breastfeeding goals.
“Breastfeeding is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition. We must do more to create supportive and safe environments for mothers who choose to breastfeed.”—Dr. Ruth Petersen, director of CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity
How Can ECE Providers Support Breastfeeding Families?
ECE providers can support breastfeeding families by creating a welcoming atmosphere and a supportive environment. This might include displaying posters or signage to indicate that your program has a dedicated space for moms to pump or nurse. Just as important, a positive, supportive attitude toward breastfeeding can go a long way in helping families feel comfortable and valued.
