Active Play in Cold Weather: Supporting Outdoor Play in ECE Settings

Conference session at the Southern Early Childhood Association 2026 Annual Conference.

Active outdoor play is important for the growth and development of young children and has many benefits for both caregivers and children. However, there are myths, preconceived notions, and challenges regarding outdoor play during cold weather. Trainers, professional development providers, and childcare providers can support caregivers and children in enjoying outdoor play in cold weather to meet evidence-based outdoor play recommendations year-round. Participations will examine common misunderstandings, challenges, and solutions to cold weather play. They will discuss national recommendations, state standards, and program policies for cold weather play. Participants will learn fun suggestions for indoor and outdoor physical activities during cold weather and have the opportunity to get moving and practice these activities.
